Inductee Historical Sites

We can learn so much about someone by walking where she walked, seeing where she grew up and considering the changes to towns and neighborhoods that may have taken place over time. Some of the sites associated with our Inductees are preserved as museums, many of which are part of the Connecticut Women's Heritage Trail. But so many of the women who have had a profound impact on their local communities and our state as a whole, do not have museums dedicated to them. Many of the places in which they lived and worked have not been preserved as historic sites and are not open to the public. Too many of the sites have already been lost, their existence all but erased over time. Our Historic Site Survey project seeks to document those sites that still remain, drawing out their historical significance and enriching the experience of those interested in learning about Connecticut's remarkable women.

In 2010, we received a generous grant from Connecticut's State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), a division of the Department of Economic and Community Development, to identify and inventory sites related to our historic Inductees. The first phase of the project was completed in 2012 through a partnership with the Ottery Group and local historian Elizabeth Hohl, Ph.D., of Fairfield University.

Now, thanks to a follow-up grant from SHPO, we are able to share all of the information compiled in phase one! We hope that learning more about the places in which our Inductees lived and worked will inspire you to explore their stories in a deeper way. Enjoy your journey!
