STEMfems Junior is a series of easy-to-implement educational modules designed specifically with Connecticut’s National Science Standards to address the critical gender gap in STEM. The modules provides opportunities for teachers to embed these modules in their curriculum to highlight pioneering Connecticut women in STEM through the stories of the Inductees. The module offers discussion activities and creative activities to encourage young people to explore the field of the inductee.

Each STEMfems Junior curricular guide is suitable for grades 3-5 and focuses on the story of one Connecticut woman’s contributions to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.


Dorrit Hoffleit

a world-renowned astronomer who studied the absolute brightness of stars. The story highlights both relevant science content and the challenges she overcame as a woman in science.

Barbara McClintock

a famed geneticist and Nobel Prize winner. The story highlights both relevant science content and the challenges she overcame as a woman in science.


Jewel Plummer Cobb

A research scientist who developed chemotherapy treatments for cancer that are still being used today. The lesson plan offers an inside look into Dr. Cobb's accomplishments through experiential activities for educators to use in the classroom.

Ms.Story is an educational module based on selected Inductees’ stories that teachers and other educators can use to bring women’s history into the lives of young people, both in and out of the classroom. Each module Is directly keyed to the Common Core State Standards and contains information about the historical paths of CWHF Inductees with messages of pushing through and overcoming the barriers. Teachers will be able to implement this module directly into their lesson plan to allow for discussion and creative activities to encourage young people to explore the topics and issues further, connecting the past to the present while inspiring participants to use their own voices to shape their future.
