Nationally, women comprise only about 27% of the STEM workforce, and this has not changed in more than a decade.  Without increased participation by women, our economy will soon not have enough workers to fill STEM jobs.

Bring STEM alive for middle school girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics! Research shows that as girls enter middle and high school they tend to lose interest in both science and math resulting in very few women participating in STEM careers. According to The United States Census Bureau, in data, in 2021 women held 50% of all jobs available in the U.S., but if looking specifically at the STEM field women only held 27% of those jobs available.

In response to this data Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame aims to encourage girls to pursue their interests in STEM by participating in hands-on workshops during our STEMfems events. Our goal is that girls will leave understanding the diversity in STEM careers and feel inspired to become anything they want to be after being exposed to positive women role models who currently work in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics

Students will be given a general understanding of the steps involved in developing a new medicine and getting it on the market. Pfizer’s women professionals will divide the students into teams and walk them through a virtual board game that will allow the students to experience many of the same frustrations and successes that Pfizer researchers face as their potential medicines move through the Drug Development process.

Build a Light-Up Circuit

Engineers from Medtronic will teach students the basics of electrical engineering while walking them through how to build their own light up circuit. We will learn about what engineering in medicine looks like while discussing how these circuits relate to our products. Learn about the world of engineering through this fun STEM activity with Medtronic!

Career Chat Using Miro

Slalom women professionals will share an overview of consulting and then use a Miro board to brainstorm about potential careers in the future.
